Study<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"ea999d0\">The Poblat de Sant Josep is an archaeological site declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 1999. The first bibliographical reference to the Poblat de Sant Josep is found in Notas para la historia de la Vall de Ux\u00f3 by Honori Garcia, a book published in 1929, where the author attributes the discovery of the site to Juan Bautista Porcar: <\/p>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e1e667 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"5e1e667\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"e-ef180f8-b5ea5df e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"ef180f8\">During the visit that the Ateneo de Castell\u00f3n made to the Cave of San Jos\u00e9 on July 15, 1928, the painter D. Juan Bautista Porcar, discovered prehistoric remains in the cave and on the mountain of the hermitage remains of an Iberian town. (...) and on the plateau of the hermitage, \"in addition to Eneolithic remains, a good Iberian settlement appears before the third century before JC <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"bd0b166\">The first archaeological interventions were carried out by the Archaeological and Prehistoric Research Service of the Castell\u00f3n Provincial Council, between 1974 and 1976, excavating the southeast area of \u200b\u200bthe settlement.<br><br>In 1997, the Municipal Archaeological Museum of the Vall d'Uix\u00f3 Town Council began documentation work to enhance the site with a first campaign of clearing, cleaning and documentation of the area excavated in the 1970s. Continuing in 2006 with the urbanization of the access and the adaptation of an accessible route and the creation of a viewpoint. <br><br>In 2014, a new phase of archaeological interventions began under the responsibility of the Vall d'Uix\u00f3 City Council with the participation of the Municipal Archaeological Museum and the Sant Josep I Employment Workshop, continuing in 2016 in the Sant Josep II workshop, with the collaboration of the Valencian Employment Service and the European Social Fund. In 2019, extensive excavations were carried out and the structures in the northern area of \u200b\u200bthe village were consolidated, with funding from the City Council and the FEDER Operational Program, with the collaboration of the Valencian Government. While in 2021 and 2022, two campaigns were carried out with their own funds.  <br><br>Between 2025 and 2026, an ambitious project was carried out to expand the excavation, consolidate the structures, turn it into a museum, create a visitor reception center, prepare an accessible itinerary and create an archaeological warehouse for the materials extracted in the excavations thanks to the Program for Improving Competitiveness and Revitalizing Historical Heritage with Tourist Use of the Ministry of Industry and Tourism of the Government of Spain with funding from the Recovery, Transformation the Old Iron<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"6ac69bb\">The Poblat de Sant Josep has different phases of occupation, the first corresponds to the Old Iron Age, a period that goes from the mid-8th century to the mid-6th century BC), although a set of Bronze Age ceramics has been documented that have not been able to be related to any structure.<br><br>The remains of the Old Iron Age are poorly preserved as a result of the alterations caused by later constructions, we know that the surface of the hill was conditioned to establish a small village, building terraces to level the ground and raise the houses. While in the extreme northwest there is a large building, of which only the foundations built with masonry walls of stones bonded with mud are preserved. It is a small <em>oppidum<\/em> , that is, a small fortified village, which was protected by a wall reinforced by three towers, two on the east slope and one on the north. The interior urban planning was structured from terraces with two main streets, which ran parallel to the east wall and other smaller ones that allowed circulation towards the upper part of the hill, thanks to the construction of stairs. With two known doors, one at the north end of the east wall and another at the south end of the same wall.   <br><br>The houses had a rectangular plan with an area of \u200b\u200babout 25 m2, some of which were divided into different spaces. The walls were built with a masonry base of stones bonded with mud, on which were built the walls of adobes bonded with yellow clay. This clay was also used to plaster the exterior surfaces, in some cases it was even painted with lime. The basis of the diet was cereals that were stored in raised granaries and in ceramic tongs inside the houses. The remains of fauna correspond mainly to sheep and goats, in addition to meat, secondary products such as milk would be used for the production of cheeses and wool for the weaving of clothes. The presence of a large number of amphorae, even spaces intended exclusively for storing them, makes us think that wine would be consumed, especially in the more advanced phases.   <br><br>Reciprocating and rotary mills were used for processing cereals. The cooking process was carried out in small ovens and hearths that were also used to heat the houses and for lighting. The documented utensils for food preparation are basically ceramic pots that appear in large quantities and are of different sizes, meaning that food would be prepared mainly in soup, stew or stew. The ceramic trousseau intended for food consumption is very wide, we find plates, pateras, bowls, jars, bottles, cups and a wide variety of calyxes.   <br><br>The analysis of the archaeological record has allowed us to identify the performance of ritual activities in the Village, the most important being the practice of infant burials inside the houses, the two best preserved were found, one inside a pair of pliers and the other in a pit covered with a slab. These are infants who died at the time of birth or during the first weeks of life, a very fragile period for the survival of babies. This is a common practice in Iberian culture, interpreted as the desire to retain memory within the domestic sphere. Other ritual elements are the anthropomorphic terracotta figurines with schematic representations of women, the small bottles and ointment jars that would contain perfumes, ointments or aromatic substances or the ask\u00f3s, a ceramic vessel in the shape of a dove considered an object of prestige.   <br><br>Other activities carried out in the Iberian Village are those linked to textile crafts, documented through ceramic materials such as spindle whorls for spinning, loom parts for weaving, as well as bronze or bone needles for sewing and some tensioners carved on deer antler. Metallurgical work was also carried out for the production of objects in copper or its alloys such as bronze, documented by the presence of cresols. It is also necessary to mention the presence of imported ceramics, especially Greek and from the Italian peninsula, which indicate the existence of commercial relations with the most important cultures of the Mediterranean of this period.  <br><br>During the 3rd century BCE, the Poblat underwent a major urban reform. This involved the expansion of the interior surface, the construction of new buildings, a new wall and a tower that considerably reinforced the defensive system. It is worth highlighting the construction of a prestigious building, on the remains of the northern wall and the houses that were attached to this structure. The building with walls 80 cm thick had a ground floor and an upper floor, which was accessed from a staircase located outside. To the north of department 17, a street was opened, the largest in the Poblat, more than 2 meters wide, enclosed by a new wall, reinforced on the outside by a large tower.    <br><br>At the end of the 3rd century BCE, the town suffered a great fire that destroyed much of the houses and the defensive system. Reference should be made to the discovery among the rubble of the walls of the atovons related to this fire, the finding of the treasure of the town. It is a treasure consisting of a set of six silver coins, a drachma, four hemioboles from the mint of Arse and a sixth coin of uncertain origin. In addition, five pieces of gold jewelry, four fusiform earrings and an oval pendant.  <br><br>After this destruction, some reforms were carried out, the Village continued to be inhabited, although gradually during the 2nd century BCE it was abandoned.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 data-interaction-id=\"e866db4\" class=\"e-e866db4-a62d01b e-heading-base\">Images of the Iberian Period farmhouse<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"076ebd6\">Until the extensive excavation of the site during the 2025-2026 campaign, the scarce presence of Andalusian materials and structures had made us think of the existence of an occasional settlement at that time. However, the last campaign has allowed us to document the existence of an Andalusian farmhouse made up of different houses and articulated by streets that broadly follow the lines marked by the urban planning of the Iberian Period, dividing the spaces. The materials documented in the rooms located at the top of the hill correspond to the time of abandonment of the farmhouse, which was in operation during the 9th and 10th centuries, a time when only another settlement has been documented so far in the Castell d'Uix\u00f3, but possibly some other farmhouse would already be inhabited, since we have a dating of a burial in the maqbara of the Pla\u00e7a Peral from the 8th century.  <br><br>These were domestic spaces with fireplaces, bookshelves, pots, jars and bottles intended for the preparation, cooking and consumption of food, others indicate the carrying out of weaving works such as the bronze thimble, iron scissors or spindle whorls. But also the practice of rituals or ceremonies evidenced by the presence of an Andalusian instrument called ta'rija or tarija, made of cylindrical ceramic with both ends open, one of which would be covered by a skin where it would be struck with the fingers to obtain the sound. And other elements such as the scapulae marked with incisions intended for practicing writing, as has been documented in other finds, although those of San Jose do not preserve remains of painting.
